Preparing Your Summit Air Conditioner for the Offseason

air-conditioning-unitSummer is coming to an end, which means it won’t be much longer before it’s time to fire up your heating system. However, before you do, there are a few things you can do to ensure that your Summit, Illinois air conditioner is prepared for this downtime.

Those responsibilities are as follows:

Make Any Necessary Repairs

Is your air conditioner not quite performing in the way that it did earlier this summer? Has it sprung a leak? Maybe it’s making some alarming noises? If so, it’s recommended that you have it inspected and repaired by an air conditioning repair technician before fall arrives.

Allowing needed repairs to persist through the offseason can have adverse effects on your air conditioner. In some cases, it can cause existing problems to worsen. In serious cases, it may  require a complete replacement of AC components.

Not to mention, it’s nice to get necessary repairs out of the way before next summer rolls around.

Clean the Condenser Area

Another thing you can do to get your air conditioner ready for the offseason is to clean and clear its surrounding area. By removing stones, sticks, and other hard objects from the area around your AC condenser, you help to ensure that your condenser doesn’t become impaired. You don’t want your system to suffer any trauma.

It’s recommended that you clear all debris within 5 feet of your AC condenser. The more barren you can keep this area, the better chance your AC has of going unscathed.

Shut It Off

When it’s clear that warm weather has ceased for the year, you’ll probably want to turn off your AC unit entirely. This will ensure that it doesn’t accidentally turn on and incur any unnecessary damage.

To turn off your AC properly, it’s generally recommended that you do more than just flip off its switch on your thermostat. In addition to doing this, you should disengage its corresponding circuit breaker switch.

An AC circuit breaker switch is typically located directly behind it in an enclosed box. Simply open this box and flip the switch. If you’re having trouble turning off your AC, you can always call in a Summit air conditioning company for assistance.

Don’t Wrap Up Your Air Conditioner!

For years, it was believed that you should wrap up your air conditioner condenser during the offseason. AC owners thought that, by wrapping their AC condensers in waterproof covers, said condensers wouldn’t suffer from rust or deterioration.

Unfortunately, this was never true. In fact, when you put a tightly-clinging cover on an AC unit, it can still allow moisture to seep in. Because this moisture will have nowhere to escape, it tends to cling to the condenser, slowly working to deteriorate both its interior components and exterior shell.

If you’re going to attempt to protect your condenser during the offseason, we recommend placing a piece of plywood over it. This will prevent moisture from making its way in, yet still allow for evaporation to occur.
