Costly Plumbing Misinformation

Top 5 Home Plumbing Myths That Cost You

There are many myths when it comes to plumbing; most of it is conventional wisdom that has been passed down through the generations. Some things you’ve been told are useful, but if you’ve heard the following five myths, these could cost your La Grange household more money in the long run.

La Grange, IL plumbing_services_360Myth #1: Lemons Freshen Your Garage Disposal

The garbage disposal will stink after a while; it’s just the nature of the beast. However, lemons will help some, but they will do more harm than good. Lemons are high in acid, and they will corrode the metal components of the disposal. So, unless you want to replace that disposal anytime soon, use your lemons for lemonade. Ice in the disposal will give it a better cleaning, even though it is noisy.

Myth #2: Using “In Tank” Cleaners Are Better For Your Toilet

Sure, everyone loves their toilet to smell nice and fresh. Using these “in-tank” cleaners should make the job of cleaning a snap. However, most of these products have a white build-up that is impossible to get rid of. It will eventually ruin the toilet. Use vinegar instead. It’s cheap and won’t cause any build up.

Myth #3: Copper Pipes Are The Best

This one comes down to a matter of opinion. Copper and other forms of metals can corrode. PVC pipes are the most inexpensive and they won’t corrode overtime. If you’ve ever lived in an old house that had rusty water coming out of the pipes, you will learn that PVC is a good option.

Myth #4: A Garbage Disposal Needs Running Water To Work Right

It seems logical enough, but water running will not help to push waste down the drain. Remember the many times you’ve reached your hands down there to unplug the thing? If there is already a blockage, the water won’t do a thing for the waste. If you insist on using water with your disposal, fill the sink about a fourth of the way full before you use the disposal. This way it will go slowly down the drain and rinse the waste with it.

Myth #5: If The Water is Going Down the Drain, All is Good!

Just because your water is going down, doesn’t mean there is a problem you cannot see lurking under the surface. Rice and pasta can easily escape down the drains and can build up over time forming a clog in your La Grange drains. Hair is another major problem for drains. Take precautions by using hair screens and plugs that can be used to keep pasta, potatoes and other things that need to be drained from going down the sink.
