Typically, you can expect to get around 10 to 15 years of top-notch use out of your air conditioner. However, in order for your AC to thrive for this duration of time, you need to monitor its health and functionality; you need to carry out regular repairs and maintenance.
How do you maintain an air conditioner, though? What does air conditioner repair and maintenance entail? Read on to find out!
Turn it Off
The first thing you’ll want to do when performing maintenance on your air conditioner is to turn it off. Trying to perform maintenance on an operating air conditioner is dangerous, to say the least. Along with switching your thermostat to the off position, you might also want to switch off the electric circuit which leads to your AC.
Clear the Condenser
Once the power of your air conditioner has been shut off, you should clear its condenser of any large debris. To do this, unscrew the cover from the condenser. Then, you can reach down into the condenser to manually retrieve any large sticks, stones, or other objects.
Scrub the Interior
Next, you’ll need to scrub down residue which exists inside the interior of the condenser. You can wipe a good deal of this residue off with a towel and cleaning spray. However, it’s also a good idea to run a hose over the interior of the condenser.
Be careful, however, not to utilize too powerful of a water stream. If the water stream is too powerful, it can damage the condenser fins.
Straighten the Fins
The fins of an AC condenser are vital in regulating airflow. If they should become bent, they could have quite a negative effect on the AC’s overall efficiency. For this reason, you should use a small, nimble tool such as a knife to straighten out these fins.
Clear the Surrounding Area
Because air conditioner condensers are situated outside, they are exposed to debris at all times. While your condenser can’t avoid this debris entirely, there is something you can do to lessen the chance of your condenser coming into contact with such debris.
What can you do? You can clear your AC’s general proximity of anything which could cause a problem. Make sure that there are no sticks, stones, or other potentially harmful objects in close contact with your AC condenser.
Clean the Coils
Your AC condenser coils are vital in the air conditioning process. When they become inundated with dirt and grime, they don’t function to their full abilities. This is why you need to keep them as clean as possible at all times.
To clean the coils, you simply scrub them with a no-rinse cleaning product. Not interested in cleaning them yourself? An air conditioner repair specialist from Allan E Power will be able to get the job done for you.
Change the Filter
No one part of your AC comes into contact with more dirt and debris than its air filter. It’s for this reason that you need to change your air filter on a regular basis. Typically, this change will be needed every 2 to 3 months. Failure to change your filter will result in a poorly-functioning air conditioner.
